Flexi-Coil air cart boosts yields and efficiency on Hyden family farm

Farmers in Western Australia’s eastern wheatbelt know all too well the challenges and rewards of large-scale cropping, where varying climate conditions and soil types call for efficient solutions.

For Gerard Lynch, who runs a 2400ha family cropping operation with wife Heather and daughter Dixie, reliable machinery is a key priority for productivity.

Located 330 kilometres east southeast of Perth in Hyden, Western Australia, Gerard and his family saw a successful harvest last year thanks to a combination of favourable weather conditions and the efficiency of their new Flexi-Coil 60 Series air cart. Their harvest far exceeded the eastern wheatbelt regional average, with barley yielding at 3.4 tonnes per hectare and wheat at 2.7 tonnes per hectare.

For Gerard, upgrading to the Flexi-Coil 60 Series air cart was all about improving efficiency on their farm. After trading in an 11,000-litre model, the Flexi-Coil 5560—with a capacity of 19,000 litres across three bins—offered increased capacity that matched the load demands of their truck and allowed them to seed more acres between refills, keeping pace with the sprayer.

“Last year was our first year with the new air cart, and it worked really well for us.

“It was really easy to calibrate so you’re getting the right rates with seeding your oats, your barley and your wheat all at different rates. We really liked the ease of the technology with it,” Gerard said.

“We found that one truck fill equalled the air seeder, so that was pretty good. It’s all about efficiency for our little operation,” he said.

Another key advantage for Gerard was the ability to fill the air cart with the conveyor, rather than using an auger, which eliminated the risk of contamination between fertiliser and seed and vice versa. This new feature, offering a load rate of 2600 litres-per minute, allowed for more accurate seed and fertiliser delivery with a gentler handling system, reducing seed damage and resulting in better germination rates.

“We are committed to providing farmers with the tools they need to optimise their operations,” said Andrew Kissel, Product Manager for Seeding and Tillage, CNH ANZ.

“With the 60 Series air cart, Flexi-Coil continues to deliver what customers are asking for. We are proud to offer the easiest to use, most advanced air cart on the market,” he said.
